Barcelona midfielder Gavi will be sidelined for as long as five months following surgery to repair a knee injury, the Spanish champions confirmed on Tuesday evening.
The 21-year-old Spain international underwent an arthroscopic procedure after damaging the meniscus in his right knee during training in August. According to the club, surgeons opted to suture the meniscus rather than remove it, a decision aimed at preserving long-term joint health. Recovery time is expected to range between four and five months.
“Gavi has had an arthroscopy to resolve a medial meniscus injury, which was sutured to preserve the meniscus,” Barcelona said in a statement. “Recovery time is estimated at around four to five months.”
The injury comes less than a year after Gavi endured a major setback when he tore his anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) while playing for Spain in November 2023. That injury kept him sidelined for much of the 2023-24 campaign, raising concerns over his long-term fitness as he returns to competitive action.
Gavi featured in Barcelona’s opening two fixtures of the current LaLiga season before sustaining the latest problem in training. His absence delivers another blow to manager Hansi Flick’s squad, which has already been grappling with fitness issues as it seeks to mount a title challenge.
The Catalan giants currently sit second in LaLiga, trailing arch-rivals Real Madrid by five points but with a game in hand. Barcelona face Real Oviedo on Thursday, with Flick under pressure to keep pace in the title race amid growing injury concerns.
For Gavi, the setback represents another frustrating pause in a career that has so far been marked by dazzling progress and untimely injuries. Widely regarded as one of Europe’s most promising young midfielders, he has already played more than 100 senior matches for Barcelona and earned a regular role in Spain’s national team setup.
His absence will force Barcelona to lean more heavily on midfielders Pedri, Frenkie de Jong, and new arrival Fermín López, while also potentially accelerating the development of academy prospects.
Spain’s national team is also expected to feel the impact, with Gavi likely to miss a significant portion of the international calendar, including preparations for upcoming friendlies and qualification fixtures.
While Barcelona expressed optimism about his recovery, the focus will be on managing his return carefully to avoid long-term complications. The club is determined not to rush him back into action, mindful of the heavy demands placed on the young midfielder since his breakthrough in 2021.
As Barcelona seek to balance their title pursuit with European commitments, the absence of Gavi represents both a tactical challenge and a psychological test for a team that has grown accustomed to relying on his relentless energy and tenacity in midfield.
