Carlos Alcaraz produced a commanding performance on Friday night, defeating 24-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic in straight sets to book his place in the US Open final. The Spaniard triumphed 6-4, 7-6, 6-2 inside Arthur Ashe Stadium, securing his 36th victory in his last 37 matches. His only setback in that remarkable stretch came against Jannik Sinner in the Wimbledon final earlier this summer.
The 22-year-old Alcaraz is chasing his sixth Grand Slam title and second crown in New York, having lifted the trophy in 2022. He will face either top-ranked defending champion Jannik Sinner or Canadian 25th seed Felix Auger-Aliassime in Sunday’s championship match.
“It’s a great feeling,” Alcaraz said afterward. “Once again in the final here in the US Open, it feels amazing. It means a lot to me. It wasn’t my best level of the tournament, but I kept a good level from the beginning to the last point. I served really well today, which was important.”
The result dealt a heavy blow to Djokovic’s hopes of making history. At 38, the Serbian was attempting to become the oldest Grand Slam winner in the Open Era. Instead, he suffered his fourth consecutive semifinal exit at a major, raising fresh questions about his ability to reclaim dominance on the sport’s biggest stages.
The contest opened with an early statement from Alcaraz, who broke Djokovic in the very first game after the veteran pushed a forehand long. Though Djokovic fought hard to avoid going down a double break, Alcaraz’s composure and precise serving carried him through the first set.
Djokovic came alive in the second, breaking Alcaraz and racing to a 3-0 lead. But the Spaniard responded with resilience, reeling off three straight games to pull level. In a tense tie-break, Alcaraz’s booming serve and relentless defense proved decisive, as he built a 4-1 advantage and closed out the set when Djokovic sent a backhand return wide.
By the third set, Djokovic’s energy visibly dipped. He summoned the trainer during the changeover but struggled to maintain intensity. Two double faults handed Alcaraz a crucial break for 3-1, and from there, the Spaniard tightened his grip. Djokovic, chasing a record-extending 25th major, faded quickly as Alcaraz sealed the win with authority.
The victory not only cements Alcaraz’s status as one of tennis’s brightest stars but also sets the stage for a blockbuster final against either Sinner, the man who denied him at Wimbledon, or Auger-Aliassime, seeking his first Grand Slam final appearance.
For Djokovic, it was another painful reminder of the passing of time, while for Alcaraz, it was further evidence that the future of men’s tennis is firmly in his hands.
