Bottom-placed Al Khor pulled off a sensational 2-1 victory over table-toppers Al Duhail in the Qatar Stars League on Saturday at the Abdullah Bin Khalifa Stadium. The unexpected win marked Al Khor’s first league triumph of the season, leaving fans and analysts stunned.
Despite the loss, Al Duhail remain atop the standings, though their lead was reduced to three points after Al Sadd and Al Ahli played out a 2-2 draw earlier in the day. Al Khor, however, remain rooted at the bottom with seven points.
Al Khor captain Ahmad Hassan Al-Mohannadi opened the scoring in the 41st minute, followed by Ruben Semedo’s powerful header in the 47th. Al Duhail’s Edmilson Junior cut the deficit in the 72nd minute, but a missed penalty by Luis Alberto in the 84th minute proved costly for the hosts.
“We played one of our best matches of the season today,” Al-Mohannadi said post-match. “The players, management, and coaching staff all contributed. We knew we had to win because of our precarious position in the league.”
The Match in Detail
Al Khor displayed remarkable resilience against the league leaders in a classic David-versus-Goliath contest. After withstanding Al Duhail’s early onslaught, Al Khor struck against the run of play just before halftime.
Al-Mohannadi capitalised on a fine pass from Yohan Boli, evading defenders and threading a shot through the goalkeeper’s legs. The ball struck the post and barely crossed the line, with Al-Mohannadi ensuring it went in.
Minutes into the second half, Al Khor doubled their lead. Semedo connected with a precision free kick from Sofiane Hanni, sending a bullet header into the net.
Al Duhail pressed relentlessly, eventually finding the net in the 72nd minute when Ismail Mohamed set up Edmilson Junior for a clinical finish. A chance to equalise came when Michael Olunga’s shot resulted in a handball penalty, but Luis Alberto fired over the bar.
Despite 14 minutes of added time, Al Khor’s defence held firm to secure their famous win.
