Working as a truck driver nowadays is very challenging especially with all the unfair conditions they are subjected to. They devote most of their life and energy to their work, but they aren’t appreciated for it. It’s clear to me that a couple of changes are in order, to make their jobs a bit easier on them and increase their productivity as well. So, here is what I think truck drivers need the most.
Support
One of the most essential things that truck drivers need is support. They barely spend time home due to their insane schedules with all their times spent behind the wheel, so their relationships with their families mainly rely on phone calls. A good support system at home would help them feel less anxious and lonely as well as motivate them to finish their jobs and return to their loved ones as fast as possible.
Also, finding people to connect and relate to could be just what they need. It would help make them feel like they aren’t alone and there are many out there who are going through the same exact thing as them. A support group of fellow truck drivers to talk to could very well do just that. If you feel like there are people who have your back, you will feel comforted, relieved even and truck drivers are no exception.
Security
You can’t deny that truck drivers face many risks when doing their job. They are confined to a car seat, hours on end, with crazy shifts and no guarantees. So, what they really need is to feel safe and secure while doing their jobs. The best way to do that is to apply for insurance for truck drivers. Then, you could choose the type of insurance you want and whether you want to insure the driver, the truck, the cargo or all three. The point is that they will feel safe when driving, the customers will be assured of the safety of their cargo and the truck owner won’t have to worry about the truck either.
It would be like a gentle reminder that no matter what, they are taken care of. This step has a very important effect of making the business itself more profitable and will increase the efficiency of the drivers. Basically, it’s a win-win situation.
Better paychecks
Because of the nature of their work, truck drivers tend to spend almost all their lives driving but the sad truth is they aren’t really compensated for the number of hours they put in. Imagine you spend all those hours, sometimes even days, driving on deserted or shady roads just to make your delivery, then you get paid scraps in the end; it’s unfair.
Even life on the road is expensive, so if they want to stop for food or water, they are going to have to pay from their already low salary. All of this is understandably frustrating and it brings them down. So, maybe increasing their paychecks and compensating them for all the hours they spend and the sleepless shifts they pull isn’t such a bad idea after all.
It’s all for the greater good
When the truck drivers get what they need, the work gets done faster and everybody is happy. You can’t ignore the fact that when you give people what they need, they, in turn, feel the need to do the same and truck drivers are no exception. So, if I were you I would seriously start to consider trying to make their lives easier just to make mine easier.
