Whether someone is just overwhelmed because of their everyday tasks, dealing with an incompetent boss, or infuriating colleagues and clients, everyone has experienced office stress one way or another. In this list, we’ve gathered some tips on how to deal with the everyday struggles, and come out even more productive and happy than ever.
Know Why You’re There
The number one way to motivate oneself is to set an intention and know why you are there. And whenever things get out of hand, remember that you’re there for a reason. People need to ask themselves the question: what do I get out of this? Is there a place to grow within the company? Is this a way into another opportunity? Is this solely for the money, and if so, is it worth it?
Stay Professional
Staying professional at all times helps people separate themselves from the company. You are there to do a job, and to do it well. And nothing else. As long as you are doing what is asked of you, and getting the work done, you have no other obligations towards the employer. People need to remember that most jobs are just a tool that supports their actual lives. It doesn’t have to eat your free time altogether.
Set Boundaries for Yourself and for Them
Another important thing is to set boundaries. Don’t let the work crawl into your personal life. Some companies sadly take advantage of employees and try to reach them after hours, or on weekends. But people have the right to stand up for themselves and point to their contact stating “this is simply too much to ask for”. And that’s not a crime. Have some backbone and take a step back.
Implement a Stress-Relief Activity Into Your Routine
For those suffering from constant stress in their job, it’s important to have a few activities in their everyday lives that help them take a step back and relax. This can be reading, writing, drawing, meditation, yoga, or any form of exercise or a hobby. But it’s important to set these tasks aside for the one very important job which is to blow off some steam and just leave reality for a minute. As soon as people let their jobs, chores, or even family drip into these sacred times, it can become tainting, and yet another stressful few hours.
Find an Escape in the Office
Just as relaxing activities at home, it’s important to find a “happy place” in the office as well. Although this can’t be anything, it can be just small things. Instead of cooking, meditating, or building a model rocket, office activities can be as simple as a picture, a stress relief toy, a good playlist (if you have the freedom to listen to music), or something like finding a peaceful nearby park or bench for that lunch break.
Have a Plan
Taking a turn back to motivation on a daily basis, having a well-thought-out plan for the future can be the light at the end of the tunnel. Even if someone doesn’t even know how to achieve that plan, it’s good to have a vision board that motivates you each and every day. This can be an escape plan from your current job, a stepping stone to your next promotion, or other opportunities outside of your current office. Whatever it is, it should always be there to motivate you to move on and roll with the punches. You can even write it down on your phone, office computer, or just a piece of paper at home or in your wallet even.
Dealing with the stress of a 9 to 5 is very hard, but doable. The most important thing is to always have a bigger plan, a goal to move forward, whether it’s a goal in your personal life or an opportunity for your professional career. Other than that, it’s important to have daily activities that tune out both the office environment and even the stress of your personal life. And building a support system through friends and family should be a given. Even if they don’t understand, they can support the need to tune out each day or on a weekly basis.
