8 Typical Farm Works in Australia

September 13, 2021

Australia is known for being one of the world’s largest producers of agricultural products. The country has different types of farms that vary in farm work. Most of the farm work is done in fields, with some of the duties involving harvesting crops, tending to livestock, inspecting farm products, and raising plants in greenhouses and open areas. For you to work on a farm, one of the requirements is physical fitness. It would be best if you also made peace with getting dirty and spending long hours working. Here are some of the typical farm works in Australia
Jobs on farms

Farm managers

Farm managers oversee the daily running of the farm. They also supervise the selling of the farm produce and respond to any threats on the farm. To qualify as a farm manager, you need a degree in agricultural business, animal health management, or animal science. A hands-on experience working on farms can come as an added advantage. In most cases, farm managers have to live on the farm to address the farm’s needs effectively.

Agricultural workers

Agricultural workers are also known as farmworkers. These individuals are usually tasked with tending to farm animals such as cattle, fowl, sheep, pigs, horses, and goats. Their tasks revolve around herding, feeding, branding, weighing, and catching the animals. Most of these animals produce fur, eggs, milk, feathers, honey, and meat. It all depends on the nature of the farm you are working on. In some farms, you may have to operate milking machines and clean the animals’ residences. Agricultural workers administer medications, vaccines, and insecticides. To become a farmworker, you need to be well trained in animal health management since you may have to examine them for diseases and injuries and even recommend treatment.

Machine operators

Machine operators are tasked with operating various machines within the farm. Some of these machines include tractors, plows, and combined harvesters. It would be best if you had basic training or experience handling farm machines to qualify for these job opportunities. As an operator may also need some basic mechanic skills to help with vehicle repairs.

Laborers

Laborers work out in the field, tending to crops. Their duties lie in harvesting grain, fruits, vegetables, trees, fibers, shrubs, and other farm produce. They also plant, weed, prune, irrigate and load the crops after harvest. Under this category, you can also find greenhouse and nursery workers. These laborers prepare land and greenhouse beds to plant crops such as flowers, sod, and trees.

Animal nutritionists

Just like humans, animals and crops need the right foods and diet to thrive. An animal nutritionist is equivalent to a human dietician. They are tasked with creating healthy meals to meet the dietary requirements of the animals under their care. When coming up with a dietary plan, they have to consider the animal species, weight, condition and produce for which the animal is kept.

Animal breeders

Animal breeders choose and breed animals based on their knowledge of animal genetics. By leveraging their expertise in animal science, breeders can produce animal offsprings that exhibit specific traits. For example, they can produce an animal that can produce milk or produce lots of furs. Breeders should maintain a record of all the characteristics of the animals they breed and those of the offspring produced.

Graders and Sorters

These professionals have one of the most straightforward jobs on a farm. Their work is to examine and sort the products before they are shipped off to the market. They have to classify the produce based on quality, color, and size. Goods that don’t meet specific criteria are discarded or repurposed.

Agricultural Inspectors

Agricultural inspectors are not attached to any specific farm; they work for the federal and state government. They are tasked with ensuring that all the laws and regulations concerning agricultural produce are adhered to. In some cases, they may have to enforce the law on farmers flaunting these laws. Inspectors also regulate the health, quality, and safety of the farm’s produce. Their focus is not only on the products but also on the production process. Agricultural inspectors go over the materials and equipment used in production to ensure they are safe and are within the quality standards set by the government.
