The Jeddah Mayoralty has reported a significant improvement in traffic flow on Palestine Street following the removal of unauthorized commercial encroachments that had caused congestion in the area. The operation, carried out by city officials, involved dismantling illegal structures set up by 19 commercial shops, covering a total area of more than 1,600 square meters.
The encroachments were removed from the southern lane in front of Dr. Soliman Fakeeh Hospital, a zone previously plagued by traffic congestion due to businesses extending their spaces into parts of the main street. According to the Jeddah Mayoralty, these shops had built structures that encroached on the planned lanes and public roadway, lacking necessary building permits and up-to-date documentation.
The removal of these structures was part of the mayoralty’s ongoing campaign to tackle illegal construction and prevent encroachments across all neighborhoods. By clearing the blocked lanes, the mayoralty aims to restore the road’s intended width, enhancing the flow of vehicles and ensuring smoother, safer access for motorists.
Jeddah officials had earlier served notices to the violating shop owners, requiring them to address the encroachments before a given deadline. The businesses were warned to either correct the illegal structures or face removal by city authorities. While some owners attempted to address the violations and comply with the regulations, the mayoralty proceeded with removals after the deadline expired, asserting that public interest and traffic efficiency were priorities.
A spokesperson for the mayoralty emphasized the importance of such measures, highlighting that maintaining unobstructed roads is critical for managing traffic in a densely populated and active commercial area like Palestine Street. The spokesperson also stated that regular inspections would be intensified to ensure ongoing compliance. “We are committed to preventing violations and will continue conducting inspection tours throughout all neighborhoods and surrounding areas of the city,” they noted.
The removal operation aligns with the mayoralty’s broader initiative to combat unauthorized construction and promote orderly urban development. The authorities intend to prevent similar issues by enforcing building codes, conducting inspections, and ensuring that businesses adhere to zoning regulations. The encroachment removals, which focus on reclaiming public spaces and upholding planned road designs, are part of Jeddah’s strategy to improve the quality of life for residents and support sustainable urban development.
With these recent actions, the mayoralty has taken a firm stance against unauthorized expansions by commercial establishments, reinforcing its commitment to organized city planning and improved public services. The city’s residents have expressed optimism that these steps will ease congestion on other major streets, enhancing the driving experience and contributing to a more efficient urban infrastructure.
