A swift medical intervention at King Abdullah Medical City’s Eye Health Center in Makkah has saved an Egyptian pilgrim from permanent blindness, Saudi health authorities confirmed on Thursday.
According to a statement from the Makkah Health Cluster, the pilgrim suffered sudden vision loss shortly after arriving in the Kingdom to perform Hajj. Following a series of urgent medical examinations, doctors diagnosed her with a retinal detachment and cataracts—conditions that could have led to irreversible vision impairment without immediate treatment.
The patient was rushed into surgery, and the medical team was able to successfully address the issues. She was discharged the same day and has since resumed her Hajj preparations.
“She is now receiving close medical follow-up to ensure retinal stability and gradual improvement in her vision,” the Health Cluster said in a statement carried by the Saudi Press Agency (SPA).
The successful operation highlights the readiness of Saudi Arabia’s healthcare system to respond to emergencies during the annual pilgrimage. Each year, the Kingdom mobilizes approximately 50,000 healthcare and support staff to provide 24-hour medical services to pilgrims arriving from across the world.
Last year alone, over 142,000 pilgrims benefited from the services of hospitals and health centers across the country during Hajj, according to data from the Ministry of Health. Among them were 4,082 inpatient cases, 24 open-heart surgeries, 249 cardiac catheterizations, and more than 1,000 dialysis sessions.
Health authorities continue to emphasize their commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of all pilgrims through advanced medical infrastructure, trained personnel, and rapid response teams stationed throughout the holy sites.
The incident also underscores the importance of early diagnosis and access to specialized care, particularly during high-demand seasons like Hajj, when medical emergencies can arise without warning.
With millions expected to converge on Makkah in the coming weeks, Saudi Arabia’s healthcare system is on high alert to manage a wide range of conditions and ensure pilgrims complete their religious rites safely.
