Saudi security forces have dismantled a major drug trafficking network operating in the Riyadh Region, leading to the arrest of 21 suspects, including 16 government officials, according to a statement from the Ministry of Interior.
The network was uncovered through a coordinated effort by the General Directorate of Narcotics Control and other relevant security agencies. After gathering evidence, authorities arrested the suspects and referred them to the Public Prosecution for further legal proceedings. The officials arrested were affiliated with various government ministries, including the Ministry of Interior, Ministry of the National Guard, Ministry of Defense, Ministry of Municipalities and Housing, and the Ministry of Justice.
The arrested individuals face a range of serious charges, including smuggling drugs into the Kingdom, tampering with seized narcotics before their destruction, transporting and promoting illegal substances, and obstructing justice by destroying evidence and leaking information related to drug cases. The network’s activities reportedly involved the systematic manipulation of evidence in drug-related investigations and the replacement of seized narcotics with similar substances before their official destruction by competent authorities.
The Ministry of Interior expressed its commitment to holding accountable anyone involved in criminal activities that threaten the security and stability of the country. In a statement, the ministry stressed its determination to combat all attempts to target the Kingdom, particularly its youth, with the spread of drugs. Authorities underscored that they will maintain strict vigilance and continue to confront criminal activities that endanger public safety.
“The security authorities will confront anyone who dares to tamper with the security and stability of this country and the safety of its citizens and expatriates,” the ministry said. Officials emphasized that they remain on high alert against any schemes aimed at undermining the security of the homeland through the illegal drug trade.
The successful operation highlights Saudi Arabia’s ongoing efforts to crack down on drug trafficking and reinforce the country’s security infrastructure. The arrests come amid increased regional and global concerns about the smuggling of narcotics, particularly in areas that have been traditionally exploited by drug cartels and organized crime syndicates.
This case is part of a broader initiative by Saudi Arabia to curb drug-related crimes and protect its citizens from the harmful effects of illegal substances, reaffirming the government’s commitment to maintaining law and order.
