Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Culture is hosting a week-long cultural celebration in Osaka, Japan, showcasing the Kingdom’s rich artistic heritage and traditional crafts as part of efforts to deepen cultural and diplomatic ties. The event runs until July 15 at the Expo Gallery EAST.
The cultural week coincides with the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Saudi Arabia and Japan, and forms part of broader celebrations marking decades of cooperation between the two nations. It also supports the Kingdom’s “Year of Handicrafts 2025” initiative, which aims to spotlight Saudi Arabia’s creative industries and preserve traditional skills.
According to the Saudi Press Agency (SPA), the event features a range of exhibitions and live demonstrations that aim to introduce Japanese and international audiences to Saudi culture and craftsmanship. Visitors can witness artisans practicing age-old techniques such as palm frond weaving, Sadu weaving, and clay pot making, presented in collaboration with the Heritage Commission and the Saudi Artisanal Company.
A major highlight of the week is a photography exhibition chronicling the historical development of Saudi-Japan relations, offering a visual journey through key diplomatic milestones and cultural exchanges over the past seven decades.
In addition to the exhibitions, guests are invited to experience a traditional Saudi majlis setting, complete with Saudi coffee and dates — a symbol of hospitality in the Kingdom. A joint musical performance is also scheduled, reflecting the fusion of cultural traditions and the spirit of collaboration between the two nations.
The cultural showcase is part of Saudi Arabia’s wider initiative to build cultural bridges with global partners and prepare for Expo 2025 Osaka. The Saudi Pavilion at the upcoming World Expo is expected to feature over 700 immersive activities that will explore the Kingdom’s rich heritage, innovative spirit, and diverse cultural landscape.
Officials say the current cultural week underscores Saudi Arabia’s growing commitment to cultural diplomacy and soft power as part of its Vision 2030 goals. The initiative aims not only to promote the Kingdom’s traditions abroad but also to strengthen international cultural cooperation and mutual understanding.
With a blend of history, art, and live performance, the Osaka event is a significant step in reinforcing the enduring relationship between Saudi Arabia and Japan.
