The King Salman Science Oasis in Riyadh hosted an inspiring scientific session featuring renowned Japanese scientist Professor Sumio Iijima, discoverer of carbon nanotubes and winner of the 2025 King Faisal Prize in Science. The event, attended by high school students, scientists, and subject-matter experts, was part of the Oasis’s broader initiative to promote scientific literacy and innovation among Saudi youth.

Organized under the theme of fostering communication between leading scientists and the younger generation, the session provided a rare opportunity for aspiring students to engage directly with one of the pioneers of modern nanotechnology.

Professor Iijima, often referred to as the “father of carbon nanotubes,” recounted his groundbreaking 1991 discovery, which transformed the field of nanotechnology. Speaking to a captivated audience, he reflected on the early challenges of his scientific journey and the inspiration behind using electron microscopy to uncover the unique cylindrical carbon structures now known as nanotubes.

“Scientific discovery often begins with curiosity and a willingness to explore the unknown,” Iijima told the audience. “I hope today’s youth embrace the challenges of research and never shy away from asking difficult questions.”

Carbon nanotubes, due to their exceptional strength, electrical conductivity, and thermal properties, have become foundational to advancements in electronics, materials science, energy storage, and biomedical engineering. Iijima’s discovery has enabled a wave of innovation in the 21st century, revolutionizing how scientists approach the development of nanomaterials.

During the session, Iijima emphasized the critical role of nanotechnology in the future, highlighting its potential in various sectors. He answered questions from students about scientific research, offering advice on pursuing careers in science and staying committed to innovation.

The event reflected King Salman Science Oasis’s mission to nurture a culture of scientific inquiry and creativity within the Kingdom. As a national initiative, the Oasis seeks to bridge the gap between scientific research and public engagement, with a strong focus on empowering youth.

“The presence of a globally respected scientist like Professor Iijima is an inspiration to our young minds,” a representative of the Oasis said. “Our goal is to create a vibrant scientific community where knowledge is shared and curiosity is celebrated.”

The scientific discussion underscored Saudi Arabia’s growing emphasis on research and development, aligning with broader national efforts to cultivate a knowledge-based economy. Events like these not only honor international achievements but also plant the seeds of future discoveries among the country’s next generation of innovators.
