In a significant stride towards bolstering food security and self-sufficiency, Saudi Arabia has increased its number of agricultural cities to 107. This expansion aligns with the ambitious Vision 2030 goals, aimed at fostering sustainability and economic diversification. These agricultural hubs are strategically distributed across various regions, including Al Jouf, Tabuk, Al Qassim, Makkah, Al Baha, Jazan, Riyadh, the Eastern Province, Najran, Al Madinah, and Asir.
These cities are not just increasing in number but also in diversity of produce. They cultivate a wide array of crops, such as papaya, Taif rose, watermelon, corn, millet, sesame, jasmine, aromatic plants, bananas, almonds, coffee, pomegranates, olives, grapes, mangoes, figs, prickly pears, and lavender flowers. This diverse agricultural output is a testament to the country’s commitment to enhancing food security through varied and sustainable agricultural practices.
In a recent announcement, the Ministry of Environment, Water, and Agriculture introduced the offering of eight new cities for investment on the “Foras” platform. These cities specialize in producing high-demand crops like pomegranates, coffee, Taif rose, aromatic oils, grapes, and almonds, particularly in the Al-Baha region.
Vision 2030, Saudi Arabia’s blueprint for long-term economic sustainability, plays a pivotal role in this agricultural expansion. The National Agriculture Strategy under this vision aims to enhance food security and achieve self-sufficiency. Reflecting these efforts, the agricultural sector’s contribution to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) rose to 109 billion SAR ($29 billion) in 2023. This impressive growth is driven by efficient production methods and the development of specialized agricultural cities.
The offering of these new cities for investment marks a significant opportunity for both local and international investors to participate in Saudi Arabia’s agricultural revolution. By focusing on crops with high economic and nutritional value, the Kingdom is not only working towards food security but also paving the way for a robust agricultural economy.
As Saudi Arabia continues to advance towards its Vision 2030 goals, the expansion and diversification of its agricultural cities stand as a cornerstone of its strategy to ensure sustainable growth and food security for future generations.
