Doha has marked a significant milestone in advancing artificial intelligence with the unveiling of the Arabic Artificial Intelligence Large Language Model (LLM) Fanar. The announcement was made by HE Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al-Thani during the opening of the World Summit AI on Tuesday.
Held under the auspices of the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology (MCIT) at the Doha Exhibition and Convention Center, the summit brought together dignitaries, including ministers and senior officials from Qatar and beyond.
Fanar, the Arabic AI language model, is seen as a groundbreaking achievement reflecting Qatar’s dedication to promoting the Arabic language and Islamic culture in the rapidly evolving AI landscape. This innovative model is the product of a collaborative effort between the MCIT and Hamad Bin Khalifa University, part of the Qatar Foundation for Education, Science, and Community Development.
Speaking at the event, Sheikh Mohammed emphasized Qatar’s commitment to positioning itself at the forefront of global AI advancements while ensuring its cultural and linguistic heritage is preserved and integrated into this transformative technology.
Themed “Putting Humanity at the Heart of AI,” the summit addresses key topics surrounding AI applications, including responsible governance, generative AI, sectoral adoption of AI technologies, and the integration of AI into daily human life. The event seeks to foster discussions on balancing technological innovation with ethical considerations, ensuring AI serves humanity responsibly and inclusively.
Fanar’s development is poised to elevate the representation of the Arabic language in the AI domain, bridging the gap between technological advancement and cultural preservation. Experts believe the model will provide enhanced capabilities for Arabic-language processing, benefiting sectors such as education, media, and business across the region and beyond.
The summit highlights Qatar’s vision for AI-driven growth and its commitment to fostering collaborations that promote sustainable and inclusive technological innovation. By launching Fanar, Qatar not only asserts its leadership in the AI sector but also reinforces its dedication to preserving and advancing the Arabic and Islamic cultural identity.
Attendees at the summit praised Qatar’s proactive approach to AI integration, with industry leaders noting the potential of Fanar to serve as a model for similar initiatives across the Arab world. The summit will continue with panel discussions, workshops, and showcases exploring the transformative potential of AI in shaping the future.
