The Qatar Red Crescent Society (QRCS) has successfully concluded a multi-specialty surgical mission in Sudan’s Northern State, providing critical medical care to vulnerable communities, the organization announced on Sunday.
A medical delegation from Doha performed 250 surgeries in pediatric, urology, and general specialties at the Dongola Specialized Hospital. The initiative was carried out in coordination with Sudan’s Federal Ministry of Health (MoH) and Northern State health authorities.
According to QRCS, the mission aimed to provide essential medical treatment for impoverished and displaced patients while alleviating pressure on the local healthcare system, which has been struggling to meet the demands of the growing population.
Dr. Satti Hassan Satti, Director-General of the Northern State MoH, expressed gratitude for the support, noting the significant impact of the free, high-quality services. “The health system in Northern State is under immense pressure due to overpopulation. This medical convoy offers invaluable assistance to vulnerable groups who otherwise lack access to specialized care,” he said.
Dr. Satti also highlighted the broader importance of such initiatives. “Through its humanitarian organizations, Qatar plays an active role in delivering essential health services to the people of Sudan. This surgical convoy marks another milestone in the strong collaboration between QRCS and the Northern State’s Ministry of Health,” he added.
The QRCS initiative is part of a larger humanitarian effort to address healthcare gaps in regions where resources are limited. The surgical convoy not only provided direct care but also supported the local health infrastructure by offering training and expertise to Sudanese medical personnel.
Local officials and residents have lauded the initiative for addressing urgent medical needs and reducing long waiting times for surgeries in the region. For many patients, access to such specialized care would otherwise be unaffordable or unavailable.
QRCS has a long history of delivering humanitarian aid to Sudan, particularly in the health sector. This recent mission underscores Qatar’s commitment to supporting global health equity and strengthening regional partnerships.
The success of this surgical convoy reflects the shared goal of both QRCS and Sudanese health authorities to improve healthcare access for underserved populations. Moving forward, QRCS plans to expand its collaboration with Sudan to address other pressing health challenges in the region.
