The second edition of the “Al Jazeera Conference: AI in Media,” organized by the Al Jazeera Media Institute, concluded on Sunday, bringing together media and technology experts to explore the transformative potential of artificial intelligence (AI) in the media industry.
Held over two days, the conference delved into AI’s role in enhancing content quality, analyzing big data, and modernizing journalistic practices while addressing the challenges posed by its adoption. Participants from global media and technology institutions shared insights on AI’s applications and its impact on the industry.
Abdulrahman Mohammed al-Shafi, Director of the Cybersecurity Strategies and Policies Department at Qatar’s National Cybersecurity Agency, spoke to Qatar News Agency (QNA) about the importance of leveraging AI’s potential while remaining vigilant against risks such as deepfakes and misinformation campaigns.
Similarly, Dr. Amani al-Abd, an assistant professor at Doha University of Science and Technology, highlighted how AI can assist media organizations in understanding public trends but cautioned against overreliance on AI tools, warning of potential risks in spreading inaccurate information. She emphasized the need for human expertise to remain central to the media ecosystem.
The event featured a technical exhibition showcasing AI applications for media, offering attendees a firsthand look at cutting-edge innovations. Murad Hassan, Director of Engagement and Audience Growth at Al Jazeera 360, emphasized the exhibition’s role in fostering collaboration and noted Al Jazeera 360’s unique features, including proprietary servers that allow unrestricted access. The platform aims to expand globally by translating its archives and broadcasting English-language content.
Key discussions during the conference included a session titled “Artificial Intelligence in Newsrooms: Pioneering Experiences,” featuring leaders such as Troy Thibodeau from the Associated Press, David Wilkinson of Reuters Imagine, and Joey Marburger of the Washington Post. They shared successful AI applications in their organizations, showcasing how AI enhances journalistic performance and streamlines newsroom operations.
Another session explored findings from the Al Jazeera Fellowship, with presentations addressing AI’s role in verifying misinformation during the 2023 Gaza War, evaluating AI-generated political news, and its application in data journalism.
The conference also examined the future of media amidst growing reliance on technology, discussing cybersecurity challenges and the need for updated educational and training programs.
The event concluded with workshops led by OpenAI ambassador Abran Maldonado, focusing on advanced AI tools for multimedia production, and Al Jazeera’s Mohamed Ajaz, who outlined strategies for using AI within the organization to drive growth while mitigating risks.
As AI continues to reshape the media landscape, the conference underscored the need for a balanced approach that combines technological innovation with human expertise.
