Globally, the GCC nations dominate five of the top 10 positions for expatriates seeking the most welcoming settling environments, as outlined in a recent InterNations report. The survey delved into four pivotal categories: digital life, housing affordability, administrative efficiency, and language challenges.
Regarding lifestyle, the UAE stands out for its streamlined administration, with over half of respondents expressing ease in navigating bureaucracy. The UAE also clinched the top spot for the simplicity of obtaining a residence permit. Many note that day-to-day life in the GCC is notably hassle-free, facilitated by well-planned cities that enhance mobility and provide convenient living and working environments.
Education in countries like the UAE boasts ranking systems aiding parents in selecting optimal schools for their children. Government validation and inspection contribute to increased confidence. Substantial private investments in UAE schools, ranking third globally, further enhance educational opportunities.
The healthcare sector in the UAE not only attracts medical tourism but also receives acclaim from expats for the high-quality care they receive. Governments in the region exhibited effective public health approaches during the pandemic, emphasizing a shift toward preventive care for integrated healthcare delivery.
Setting up a business in the UAE is notably streamlined, with efficient processes for acquiring licenses, visas, and corporate bank accounts, making it conducive for entrepreneurs.
However, expats face challenges, such as housing affordability in cities like Dubai and Abu Dhabi. Employers in the UAE are adapting remuneration packages to address this concern. Additionally, many GCC countries emphasize localizing the private sector workforce, balancing job creation for locals, and attracting global talent.
For expatriates, numerous opportunities arise in critical sectors within the GCC. Technology, which focuses on software development, cybersecurity, and data analysis, is pivotal. Digital health, leveraging the region’s high smartphone penetration, offers prospects for skilled workers. The healthcare sector, grappling with a global shortage of professionals, aims to attract and retain more practitioners through immigration reforms. Banking and finance witness a surge in job vacancies, while sustainability initiatives across various sectors, especially in alignment with ESG goals, provide promising career prospects for expats in the Gulf. The GCC’s commitment to environmental leadership, underscored by hosting COP28, indicates a growing landscape of opportunities for expatriates.
