United Nations Security Council Increased Aid to Gaza after US abstains
On Friday, the United Nations Security Council greenlit a modified proposal to increase humanitarian aid to Gaza. Following a week of deliberations and efforts to sidestep a U.S. veto, the council urged immediate actions for a lasting halt to hostilities. The move comes amidst heightened global concern over the escalating death toll in the 11-week Israel-Hamas conflict and the deteriorating conditions in Gaza. The U.S. chose to abstain, enabling the council of 15 to pass a resolution crafted by the United Arab Emirates.
The U.S. and Israel resist a ceasefire, contending it would primarily favor Hamas. Instead, Washington advocates for intermittent halts in combat to safeguard civilians and release hostages held by Hamas.
