In a humanitarian move aimed at easing difficulties faced by foreign nationals amid ongoing regional challenges, the United Arab Emirates has announced the waiver of all overstay fines for Iranian citizens currently in the country, including both residents and visitors.
The announcement was made under the directives of UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan and confirmed by the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security (ICP), as reported by the state news agency WAM.
The UAE’s decision comes in light of recent disruptions to air travel in the region, which have prevented many Iranian nationals from returning home. In response to these exceptional circumstances, the country has opted to take humanitarian action by lifting financial penalties for those affected.
According to the ICP, the waiver applies to all Iranian nationals irrespective of their visa type. The authority urged those eligible to register through the ICP Smart Services platform or visit any ICP customer happiness center across the Emirates to regularize their status.
“This measure reflects the UAE’s ongoing commitment to humanitarian values and the well-being of all residents and visitors, particularly in times of crisis,” the ICP said in a statement.
The move also highlights the country’s existing immigration regulations, particularly concerning penalties for overstaying visas. Tourists and other visitors typically face fines of AED 100 for the first day of overstay and AED 50 for each subsequent day. An exit permit fee, which ranges from AED 250 to AED 350, is also required before departure.
The rules vary depending on the type of visa. Travelers entering the UAE on a 30-day or 90-day visa on arrival are expected to leave before the visa expires, with no grace period allowed. Those holding prepaid visas arranged before travel are also subject to the same fine structure if they overstay.
While visa extensions are possible through sponsors or travel agencies, overstay fines continue to accrue until the extension is approved. UAE authorities advise all visitors to closely monitor their visa status and consult with official service centers to avoid penalties.
The temporary exemption for Iranian nationals marks a rare and compassionate policy shift aimed at alleviating difficulties during uncertain times, reaffirming the UAE’s stance as a regional leader in crisis response and humanitarian outreach.
