Pennsylvania, July 14 (Reuters) – Donald Trump’s chances of winning the 2024 presidential election have significantly increased after an apparent assassination attempt left him injured on Saturday, according to a leading bookmaker.
During a rally near Butler, Pennsylvania, a gunman opened fire, killing one attendee and seriously wounding two others, a Secret Service spokesperson reported. Broadcast footage showed Trump being struck on his right ear, resulting in visible bleeding before he was surrounded by Secret Service agents and led from the stage. Despite his injury, Trump defiantly raised his hand in a clenched fist. The FBI identified the attacker as 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks, who was killed by return fire from the Secret Service.
Prior to the assassination attempt, William Hill, a U.K.-based betting company, had set Trump’s odds of winning the 2024 presidential election at 8/15 (65.2 percent). Following the shooting, these odds were slashed to 4/11 (73.3 percent), reflecting a significant increase in his chances of victory.
Reacting to the shooting on his Truth Social platform, Trump extended his condolences to the family of the deceased attendee and expressed his disbelief that such an act could occur in the United States. “Nothing is known at this time about the shooter, who is now dead. I was shot with a bullet that pierced the upper part of my right ear,” Trump wrote. “I knew immediately that something was wrong in that I heard a whizzing sound, shots, and immediately felt the bullet ripping through the skin. Much bleeding took place, so I realized then what was happening. GOD BLESS AMERICA!”
The assassination attempt has not only sparked an outpouring of support for Trump but also raised pressing questions about the security measures in place for presidential candidates. The incident is being investigated by the FBI, and it is expected to have a profound impact on the dynamics of the upcoming election.
