Irish Prime Minister Leo Varadkar has officially submitted his resignation.
Varadkar held a meeting with President Michael D. Higgins at the presidential residence in Dublin on Monday evening to formalize his resignation. Sabina Higgins, the president’s spouse, was also in attendance at Áras an Uachtaráin.
Varadkar’s resignation marks the end of his tenure as Taoiseach of Ireland.
In a surprising move back in March, Varadkar, the former leader of Fine Gael, announced his decision to step down from his position as head of government. He cited a combination of personal and political reasons for his departure.
Varadkar, who at the age of 38 became the youngest Taoiseach of Ireland in 2017, led the coalition government in Dublin, comprising three parties: Fine Gael, Fianna Fáil, and the Green Party.
Meanwhile, Simon Harris, the uncontested leader of Fine Gael, is expected to be voted in as the new Taoiseach by members of parliament on Tuesday.
