The death toll from the crash of a Sudanese military aircraft in a residential area of Omdurman has risen to 46, local media reported on Wednesday. The incident, which occurred on Tuesday during takeoff from Wadi Seidna military airport, also left ten others injured, according to the state news agency SUNA.
The Sudanese Army confirmed the crash but did not disclose the cause. Reports indicate that both military personnel and civilians were among the casualties, as the aircraft went down in a densely populated neighborhood in northern Omdurman, west of the capital, Khartoum.
Authorities have launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash, though no official statement has been released regarding possible technical failures or external factors contributing to the incident.
The crash comes amid Sudan’s ongoing civil war, which has been raging since April 2023 between the Sudanese Army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF). The conflict has already claimed over 20,000 lives and displaced approximately 14 million people, according to the United Nations and local authorities. However, research from U.S. universities estimates that the actual death toll could be as high as 130,000.
The ongoing violence has severely impacted Sudan’s infrastructure and security, increasing risks for both civilians and military operations. As rescue teams continue their efforts at the crash site, concerns grow over the deteriorating humanitarian situation in the war-torn nation.
The Sudanese military has yet to comment on whether the crash was related to the ongoing conflict or purely an accident. Meanwhile, international organizations and neighboring countries have urged for an end to the hostilities, emphasizing the urgent need for a ceasefire and humanitarian assistance.
Further updates are expected as authorities investigate the cause of the crash and assess its implications amid the broader conflict in Sudan.
