Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez announced on Friday that Spain, alongside Ireland, Malta, and Slovenia, has agreed to take initial steps towards recognizing the State of Palestine. The agreement was made during a meeting on the sidelines of the European Council summit in Brussels. Sanchez anticipates Spain’s recognition of Palestine during the current legislative session, which began in 2023. The leaders emphasized their shared belief in a two-state solution for lasting peace and stability in the region.
This decision aligns with previous agreements between Arab countries and the European Union, underscoring the importance of the two-state solution. Notably, since 1988, 139 out of 193 UN member states have recognized the State of Palestine.
