Washington, D.C. — Kimberly Cheatle, the head of the United States Secret Service, is stepping down following intense criticism over the agency’s failure to prevent an assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump. The incident occurred during a rally in Pennsylvania on July 13, where Trump, the Republican presidential nominee, was shot in the ear.
Cheatle announced her resignation in an email to staff on Tuesday, a move first reported by The Associated Press. “I take full responsibility for the security lapse,” Cheatle wrote. “In light of recent events, it is with a heavy heart that I have made the difficult decision to step down as your director.”
The resignation comes amid growing pressure from U.S. lawmakers demanding accountability and answers regarding the breach in security protocols at the rally.
President Joe Biden thanked Cheatle for her decades of service and assured her that a replacement would be appointed soon. “The independent review to get to the bottom of what happened on July 13 continues, and I look forward to assessing its conclusions. We all know what happened that day can never happen again,” Biden said in a statement.
In response to Cheatle’s resignation, Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas announced the appointment of Ronald L. Rowe, the Secret Service’s deputy director, as acting director. Rowe is expected to serve in this capacity while a thorough investigation into the security failure is conducted.
As the investigation proceeds, the nation remains on high alert, with calls for enhanced measures to ensure the safety of political figures and public events.
