August 10, 2024 – Kursk, Russia: Russia has evacuated over 76,000 people from the Kursk region after declaring a state of emergency in response to an unprecedented Ukrainian incursion across the border. The incursion, now in its fifth day, has triggered fierce fighting, forcing President Vladimir Putin to call in reserve troops to reinforce Russian defenses.
The situation escalated rapidly earlier this week when approximately 1,000 Ukrainian troops, supported by tanks and armored vehicles, breached the Russian border in the early hours of Tuesday. The Ukrainian forces reportedly penetrated more than six miles into Russian territory, overcoming two defensive lines and a fortified stronghold in the Kursk region.
Moscow’s response has been swift, with the federal government declaring a state of emergency and initiating large-scale evacuations of civilians from the affected areas. The evacuation, which has displaced tens of thousands of residents, reflects the gravity of the situation as Russian forces grapple with the unexpected Ukrainian advance.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has praised his army’s efforts, highlighting their ability “to surprise” and “achieve results” in the ongoing conflict, though he did not directly address the raid by name. The incursion into Kursk represents one of the most significant developments in the conflict since its onset, raising concerns about the stability of Russia’s border regions.
Meanwhile, Ukraine has claimed responsibility for a separate attack on a Russian military airfield in the Lipetsk region, located over 100 miles from the border. The strike reportedly caused a large fire and damaged stockpiles of guided bombs at the airfield, which houses Su-34, Su-35, and MiG-31 warplanes. The successful strike deep within Russian territory further underscores Ukraine’s expanding reach and capability in the conflict.
The situation remains fluid, with both sides likely to escalate their military actions as the conflict enters a new and more dangerous phase. The Russian government has vowed to respond decisively to the incursion, raising fears of a broader escalation in the region.
