Islamabad, August 6, 2025 – Pakistan’s Defence Minister Khawaja Asif has stirred controversy with allegations that over half of the country’s senior bureaucrats have purchased properties in Portugal to secure citizenship and retire abroad using wealth amassed through corrupt practices. In a post on X, Asif claimed that these high-ranking officials are investing in Portuguese real estate as a means to escape accountability and enjoy comfortable retirements.
Asif accused the bureaucracy of “polluting” Pakistan’s governance, arguing that bureaucrats face less public scrutiny than politicians, who must contend with elections and public accountability. “Politicians cannot amass such wealth or buy properties abroad due to constant public and electoral pressure,” Asif stated in his post.
The allegations have ignited a firestorm of debate in Pakistan. Supporters of Asif’s claims argue that they expose systemic corruption within the bureaucracy, pointing to the growing trend of wealthy Pakistanis seeking foreign residency through investment-based citizenship programs, such as those offered by Portugal. Critics, however, have questioned the lack of concrete evidence behind the minister’s accusations, calling for substantiation of the claims.
The controversy underscores broader concerns about governance and accountability in Pakistan, with many calling for reforms to address alleged corruption among senior officials. Asif’s remarks have also drawn attention to the appeal of Portugal’s investment-based residency programs, which have become a popular avenue for wealthy individuals seeking European citizenship.
As the debate continues, the government has yet to announce any formal investigations into the allegations. The public awaits further developments on whether these claims will lead to tangible action against corruption or remain a point of political contention.
