BLENHEIM PALACE, England – On Thursday, Keir Starmer, the newly elected British Prime Minister, welcomed dozens of European leaders to the European Political Community (EPC) summit at Blenheim Palace. This significant event marks Starmer’s initial steps towards repairing the UK’s strained relationships with its European neighbors following the Conservative party’s turbulent Brexit era.
The one-day summit, held at the birthplace of Britain’s World War II leader Winston Churchill, brought together over 45 leaders, including Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. The discussions focused on critical issues such as Ukraine, illegal migration, and energy security.
Starmer, who led the Labour Party to a decisive victory over the Conservatives two weeks ago, emphasized his commitment to resetting Britain’s relationship with its European allies. He aims to address the challenges posed by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, combat people-smuggling networks, and ensure energy security.
“The EPC will fire the starting gun on this government’s new approach to Europe, one that will not just benefit us now, but for generations to come,” Starmer stated ahead of the summit. The event symbolizes a new chapter in UK-European relations, with Starmer underscoring Britain’s intention to adopt “a more active and greater convening role on the world stage, to strike genuine partnerships that have an impact on people’s lives.”
The Prime Minister also highlighted that border security would be “at the heart of the government’s reset with Europe,” signaling a proactive stance on tackling illegal migration and enhancing the UK’s security measures.
This summit at the stately home near Oxford represents a pivotal moment for Starmer’s government, setting the tone for future collaborations and reinforcing the UK’s commitment to its European allies.
