A minor earthquake measuring 2.0 on the Richter scale was recorded in Khor Fakkan at 8:35pm on Tuesday, August 5, 2025, according to the National Seismic Network of the National Centre of Meteorology (NCM). No damage or injuries were reported.
The seismic event comes as the UAE steps into a dynamic weather period, with the NCM issuing its five-day forecast highlighting a mix of hot, hazy conditions, sporadic rainfall, and dusty winds across parts of the country through Sunday, August 10.
The country is currently under the influence of a weak surface low-pressure system extending from the east, coupled with an upper air trough—an atmospheric combination expected to drive unstable weather patterns, particularly in the eastern and southern regions.
Midweek Outlook: Hot, Hazy, and Unsettled
Wednesday, August 6, is expected to begin with fair to partly cloudy skies, becoming cloudier in the afternoon as convective cloud formations develop in the east. These clouds may result in brief but localised showers.
Winds will blow from the southeast to northeast at speeds ranging from 10 to 25 km/h, occasionally picking up to 40 km/h in open and inland areas, leading to hazy and dusty conditions. On the coast and islands, wind speeds are expected to peak at 35 km/h.
Despite cloud build-ups and occasional rain, temperatures will remain high. Inland regions may see highs nearing 49°C, while coastal and island areas will hover between 40°C to 45°C with humidity levels of up to 90 per cent. Mountainous areas will be slightly cooler, with temperatures reaching 39°C.
Thursday and Friday: Chance of Showers Continues
The pattern of partly cloudy skies continues on Thursday and Friday, with increased likelihood of convective cloud development over the eastern and southern areas. Short afternoon rain showers are expected to offer momentary relief from the summer heat.
Winds are forecast to maintain their southeasterly to northeasterly direction, occasionally gusting up to 40 km/h, potentially reducing visibility in desert and open areas due to blowing dust.
Weekend Forecast: Clearer Skies with Isolated Rain
Heading into the weekend, similar conditions will prevail. Saturday and Sunday are expected to remain mostly clear to partly cloudy, with the potential for isolated rainfall in eastern regions during the afternoon.
Sea conditions throughout the week are predicted to remain slight in both the Arabian Gulf and the Oman Sea, making it relatively safe for marine activities.
Precautions Advised
The NCM has urged residents—particularly in the eastern parts of the country—to remain cautious during periods of strong wind and sudden rain, warning that loose objects and weak structures may pose risks. Drivers are also advised to be vigilant in areas with reduced visibility due to dust or rain accumulation.
The public is encouraged to stay updated via official NCM channels, especially when planning outdoor activities or travel during peak afternoon hours.
