A 32-year-old man has been charged with multiple counts of attempted murder following a violent knife attack on a train bound for London that left 11 people injured, British Transport Police (BTP) said on Monday.
The suspect, identified as Anthony Williams, faces several charges including attempted murder, actual bodily harm, and possession of a bladed article after the incident, which took place on Saturday. Authorities said the attack, which lasted only a few minutes, caused chaos and panic among passengers as the train made its way through eastern England.
According to police, the train was forced to make an emergency stop in the town of Huntingdon, Cambridgeshire, where officers quickly apprehended the suspect. Eyewitnesses described scenes of terror as passengers scrambled to escape the carriage while others attempted to help the wounded.
Paramedics and police units rushed to the scene, treating victims both on board and on the platform. Eleven people were taken to nearby hospitals for treatment. One of the injured, a member of the train staff, remains in critical but stable condition, authorities confirmed.
Detectives said they are not treating the incident as terrorism-related but continue to investigate the suspect’s motives. “This was a fast-moving and deeply distressing incident that left many people shocked,” said a spokesperson for the British Transport Police. “Our officers responded swiftly, preventing further harm and ensuring the suspect was taken into custody.”
Train operator officials praised staff and emergency responders for their quick actions, which they said likely prevented more serious casualties. Services on the affected line were temporarily suspended on Saturday while investigators examined the scene.
Williams is expected to appear before magistrates later this week. Police have urged anyone who witnessed the attack or has video footage from the train to come forward as they continue to piece together the sequence of events leading up to the stabbings.
The shocking incident has reignited public concern over knife-related violence in the UK, with politicians and advocacy groups calling for stronger measures to prevent similar attacks in public spaces.
