Lebanese President Seeks to Revive Saudi Military Aid Package

Lebanese President Seeks to Revive Saudi Military Aid Package

Lebanese President Joseph Aoun has reportedly requested Saudi Arabia to reactivate a $3 billion aid package for Lebanon’s army, in an effort to bolster the country’s military capabilities amid ongoing economic and security challenges.

Speaking in an interview with Asharq TV on Friday, Aoun expressed his desire to restore strong economic and political ties with Riyadh, emphasizing the importance of Saudi support for Lebanon’s stability.

“I hope and I await from Saudi Arabia – and especially the Crown Prince – to correct the relationship in the interests of both countries,” Aoun stated.

A Renewed Plea for Military Support

The $3 billion aid package, originally pledged by Saudi Arabia in 2014, was halted in 2016 amid diplomatic tensions between the two nations. The suspension came after Lebanon failed to condemn attacks on Saudi diplomatic missions in Iran and due to concerns over Hezbollah’s growing influence in Lebanese politics and military affairs.

Aoun, who previously served as Lebanon’s army commander before his election as president on January 9, has made military support a key priority. His expected appeal to reactivate the Saudi grant was set to be delivered during his visit to Riyadh on Sunday—his first official trip since taking office.

Saudi-Lebanese Relations at a Crossroads

The request for Saudi assistance comes at a time when Lebanon faces severe economic hardship, with its currency in free fall and state institutions, including the military, struggling due to limited funding. The Lebanese Armed Forces (LAF), long considered a unifying force in the politically divided country, has been particularly affected by the crisis, with soldiers’ salaries devalued and operational funding scarce.

Saudi Arabia has traditionally played a key role in Lebanon’s economy and politics, but relations have soured in recent years due to Iranian-backed Hezbollah’s increasing power within the country. However, Aoun’s outreach signals an attempt to mend diplomatic ties and restore Saudi confidence in Lebanon’s political direction.

Awaiting Saudi Response

As of now, no official statement has been made by Saudi authorities regarding Aoun’s request or the potential reinstatement of the aid package. It remains to be seen whether Riyadh will agree to resume military assistance, given the broader geopolitical concerns in the region.

Aoun’s visit to Saudi Arabia, if successful, could mark a turning point in Lebanon’s efforts to secure much-needed external support, as the country grapples with one of the worst economic crises in its history.
