Italy has expressed its readiness to assist in training police forces in Gaza and other areas of the Palestinian territories, as the country seeks to play a stabilizing role in the Middle East. Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani announced the plans during a news conference in Rome on Monday.
“We are ready to train a new Gaza police force, and we are also ready to train a Palestinian police force,” Tajani said, highlighting Italy’s commitment to supporting security and law enforcement development in the region.
The minister also confirmed that Italy would take part as an observer in the US-led Board of Peace initiative, a diplomatic effort aimed at promoting stability and security in the Palestinian territories. Tajani noted that Italy had been invited to attend a meeting of the group this week in Washington.
Italy’s offer comes amid ongoing concerns about security and governance in Gaza, where authorities have faced challenges in maintaining public order and delivering essential services. By providing training and support to local police forces, Italy hopes to contribute to broader peacebuilding efforts and strengthen institutional capacity.
The Italian government has emphasized that its involvement will focus on technical support, professional development, and capacity-building for law enforcement agencies. Tajani underscored that Rome’s role will complement international initiatives, including those led by the United States, aimed at fostering stability in the region.
Observers note that Italy’s participation in training programs could also enhance cooperation with other European nations involved in Middle East diplomacy. By engaging directly in security sector reform, Italy is positioning itself as an active partner in efforts to reduce tensions and improve governance in the Palestinian territories.
The announcement reflects Italy’s broader foreign policy approach, which seeks to balance diplomatic engagement with practical support on the ground. Officials in Rome have stressed that any assistance provided will be aligned with international law and coordinated with local authorities to ensure effectiveness and sustainability.
Tajani’s comments signal Rome’s willingness to take a hands-on approach to peacebuilding in the Middle East, focusing on concrete initiatives such as police training while participating in multilateral diplomatic forums. The upcoming meeting in Washington is expected to outline further steps for Italy’s involvement and clarify the scope of its contribution to the Board of Peace initiative.
