The Consulate General of India in Dubai has announced the launch of the Global Passport Seva Programme (GPSP 2.0), marking a major leap forward in the digital transformation of passport services. Starting October 28, 2025, all passport-related applications will be processed exclusively through the upgraded online portal, designed to streamline procedures, strengthen data security, and enhance user convenience.
The new system will require applicants to register and submit their passport applications online through the dedicated GPSP 2.0 portal. Once registered, users can complete their applications, print the submitted form, and schedule an appointment at their nearest BLS International Centre to submit supporting documents. The Consulate emphasized that the updated process is aimed at reducing paperwork and cutting down on in-person visits, offering a faster and more efficient experience for applicants.
Key Features and Benefits
Under the upgraded GPSP 2.0 system, Indian citizens will now be issued e-passports, equipped with an embedded electronic chip containing digitized personal and biometric information. This advanced technology, compliant with the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) standards, will facilitate smoother and faster immigration clearances at airports worldwide.
Applicants will be able to upload ICAO-compliant photographs, signatures, and supporting documents directly to the portal. The Consulate has encouraged citizens to use this feature to minimize processing delays at collection centers. Minor corrections to submitted applications can also be made by service providers at no additional charge, eliminating the need to re-enter data at BLS offices.
E-Passports: Enhanced Security and Global Compatibility
The e-passport combines a traditional booklet with a Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) chip and antenna that securely store the holder’s biometric and personal details. A gold-colored symbol on the passport’s front cover distinguishes it as an electronic passport.
This new technology enhances the integrity and authenticity of passport data through Public Key Infrastructure (PKI), ensuring protection against forgery, tampering, and identity theft. Immigration authorities worldwide can authenticate data stored in the chip, enabling quicker and more secure verification processes.
Phased Rollout Across India
The Consulate clarified that existing passports remain valid until their expiry and do not need immediate replacement. However, as Indian passport offices adopt the new e-passport technology, new applicants will automatically receive the upgraded version. The nationwide rollout is expected to take place in phases over the coming months.
More information about GPSP 2.0 and the e-passport initiative is available on the Consulate General of India, Dubai’s official website.
