According to Iranian state media, a helicopter transporting President Ebrahim Raisi crashed during inclement weather. President Raisi was traveling in the far northwest of Iran after visiting Azerbaijan. The crash occurred in a mountainous area enveloped by heavy fog, making rescue efforts challenging.
Officials have established contact with both a passenger and a crew member from the president’s helicopter, as reported by state TV. However, the situation remains tense as rescuers continue their efforts to reach the crash site. “We are still hopeful but information coming from the crash site is very concerning,” said the official, speaking anonymously.
“Various rescue teams are on their way to the region but because of the poor weather and fogginess it might take time for them to reach the helicopter.”
Emergency services spokesman informed that a rescue helicopter attempted to reach the crash site but was unable to land due to the dense fog. In response, the army’s chief of staff has ordered the deployment of all available resources, and Iraq has also offered assistance.
