At least 10 people, including a three-year-old child, were killed when gunmen opened fire inside a hostel in Pretoria on Saturday, police confirmed. The attack, which left the community reeling, took place in the early hours in South Africa’s administrative capital, where authorities say the motive remains under investigation.
Police spokeswoman Athlenda Mathe said a total of 25 people were shot during the assault. Fourteen survivors were rushed to nearby hospitals for emergency treatment, with several reported to be in critical condition. “I can confirm that a total of 25 people were shot,” Mathe said. “Fourteen have been hospitalized.”
The incident unfolded at a residence known to house workers and low-income residents. Witnesses told local media they awoke to a barrage of gunfire as attackers stormed the building, moving through rooms as occupants scrambled for cover. Police arrived to find multiple casualties spread across the premises.
Authorities quickly cordoned off the area, and forensic teams worked through the morning collecting evidence and identifying victims. While officers have not speculated publicly about a motive, the scale and coordination of the shooting have raised concerns about the involvement of organized criminal groups. Hostel communities in parts of South Africa have historically been vulnerable to gang-related violence, extortion rackets and factional disputes.
Residents described scenes of panic as the gunmen entered the property. Some reported hearing shouting before the attackers opened fire, while others said the shooting began without warning. The death of the young child has intensified outrage across social media, with community leaders calling for urgent protection and a stronger police presence in high-risk neighborhoods.
The attack has drawn national attention at a time when the government has been facing criticism over the country’s rising murder rate. South Africa records some of the highest levels of violent crime in the world, and security experts have frequently warned that mass shootings have become increasingly common in recent years.
Police have launched a manhunt for the suspects and appealed to the public for information that could assist in the investigation. No arrests had been announced by Saturday evening.
Local officials visited the scene, offering condolences to the families of the victims and pledging support for those injured. Crisis counselors have also been deployed to assist traumatized residents.
As authorities work to piece together the events that led to the attack, community members say they fear further violence unless swift action is taken. For now, the hostel remains sealed off as police continue their investigation into one of Pretoria’s deadliest shootings in recent memory.
