The Department of Health – Abu Dhabi (DoH), in partnership with the Abu Dhabi Public Health Centre (ADPHC), has announced the launch of the region’s first-of-its-kind Personalised Weight Management Programme, aimed at tackling obesity and preventing chronic diseases through a comprehensive, science-based approach.
The initiative combines digital health monitoring, tailored clinical support, and a unique reimbursement model to promote long-term weight management and active living. It targets the reduction of risk factors associated with conditions such as type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and some forms of cancer.
Open to eligible Thiqa members aged 18 and above who are clinically classified as overweight or obese, the programme is designed to encourage sustained engagement and accountability. It moves away from a one-size-fits-all approach, offering personalised plans and continuous digital tracking to support healthier lifestyles.
Dr. Noura Al Ghaithi, Undersecretary of the Department of Health, emphasised that the programme is focused on more than just weight loss. “Our focus is on health—not just weight. This programme supports our vision of an active, health-conscious community by empowering individuals through personalised, science-driven solutions,” she said. “Weight management requires customised approaches, and this initiative ensures that each participant receives the tools and support necessary to succeed.”
The programme’s reimbursement model, which incentivises ongoing participation, is a key feature. It seeks to drive long-term behavioural change by rewarding progress and continuous commitment, addressing one of the primary challenges in weight management: adherence.
Dr. Rashid Obaid Al Suwaidi, Director-General of ADPHC, highlighted how the initiative fills a longstanding gap in preventive healthcare. “Even modest weight loss and slight increases in physical activity can significantly lower the risk of chronic diseases,” he said. “Historically, healthcare systems have lacked structured pathways for connecting patients with services that promote physical activity and lifestyle changes. This programme addresses that by offering personalised guidance, digital tools, and clinical oversight.”
Participants will benefit from structured activity plans, real-time digital monitoring, and access to professional support, making it easier to track progress and make informed health decisions. Authorities hope the initiative will serve as a model for other regions looking to tackle rising rates of obesity and lifestyle-related illnesses.
The programme’s launch aligns with Abu Dhabi’s broader public health strategy to encourage prevention, early intervention, and community engagement as cornerstones of a sustainable healthcare system.
