The State of Qatar took part in the high-level meeting commemorating the International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons, held on the sidelines of the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York. The meeting, opened by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, brought together global leaders to discuss the ongoing efforts towards nuclear disarmament.
Qatar was represented by HE Sheikha Hanouf bint Abdulrahman Al-Thani, Director of the International Organizations Department at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. During her speech, Her Excellency emphasized the significance of the meeting in underscoring the international community’s commitment to eradicating nuclear weapons. She also highlighted Qatar’s proactive role in advancing global agreements on nuclear non-proliferation.
Her Excellency reaffirmed Qatar’s dedication to updating national laws in alignment with international efforts aimed at preventing the spread of nuclear weapons. She further called for the establishment of nuclear-weapon-free zones in the Middle East, reiterating Qatar’s readiness to collaborate with all relevant parties to achieve a world free of weapons of mass destruction.
Qatar’s participation in the high-level meeting reflects its continued commitment to promoting peace and security on the global stage through diplomacy and active involvement in multilateral initiatives related to disarmament.
