Israel Expands War Goals to Ensure Safe Return of Northern Residents Amid Hezbollah Attacks

Israel Expands War Goals to Ensure Safe Return of Northern Residents Amid Hezbollah Attacks

Israel has officially added the safe return of residents to its northern regions as a key objective in its ongoing military operations, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office announced late Monday. The decision was made by the security cabinet in response to escalating cross-border attacks by the Iran-backed Hezbollah militia in southern Lebanon.

Since the surge in fighting on October 8, approximately 60,000 people have been evacuated from northern Israel due to near-daily Hezbollah attacks. The escalation began one day after Hamas militants launched a deadly assault on southern Israel from Gaza, leading Hezbollah to fire on Israeli positions in solidarity with the Palestinians.

“The Security Cabinet has updated the objectives of the war to include the following: Returning the residents of the north securely to their homes,” a statement from the prime minister’s office read, adding that “Israel will continue to act to implement this objective.”

Israeli Defence Minister Yoav Gallant underscored the need for military action to ensure the safe return of northern residents, stating during a meeting with U.S. envoy Amos Hochstein, “The possibility for an agreement is running out as Hezbollah continues to tie itself to Hamas.” Gallant emphasized that Israel’s only remaining option to ensure the safety of its northern communities was through military measures.

Meanwhile, U.S. Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin expressed concern over the potential for further escalation, warning of the “devastating consequences” for Israel, Lebanon, and the broader region. Austin reiterated the importance of pursuing a ceasefire and giving diplomatic efforts time to succeed, according to a statement from the U.S. defense department.

Israel has consistently signaled that it could launch a larger military operation to push Hezbollah forces back from the border, but so far, the group has not publicly commented on the situation.

The inclusion of northern residents’ return to Israel’s war goals adds to the nation’s previously stated objectives, which include the destruction of Hamas’ military capabilities, the safe return of hostages taken during the October 7 Hamas attack, and ensuring that Gaza no longer poses a threat to Israel.

The conflict has resulted in significant casualties on both sides. More than 1,200 people were killed in Israel during the Hamas attack, and at least 251 hostages were taken to Gaza. In Gaza, over 41,220 people have died since the fighting began, according to the Hamas-controlled health ministry.
