Airlines Reroute Flights as Iran Tensions Disrupt Middle East Air Travel

Airlines Reroute Flights as Iran Tensions Disrupt Middle East Air Travel

“European airlines like Wizz Air, Lufthansa and British Airways dodged Iraqi and Iranian airspace on Thursday,” flight tracking websites showed, as carriers adjusted routes to reduce exposure to rising security risks linked to Iran and wider regional tensions.

The changes came a day after Iran temporarily shut its airspace for nearly five hours, triggering widespread flight cancellations, diversions and delays. Although Iranian authorities later reopened the corridor, many airlines chose not to return to their usual paths, instead flying over Afghanistan and parts of central Asia.

According to FlightRadar24, carriers including Singapore Airlines and TUI continued to use alternative routes, reflecting ongoing caution among operators. Aviation security specialists warned that the reopening of airspace did not remove the possibility of further disruption.

“We recommend refraining from booking flights that transit the area at this time and for the next seven days, after which the situation will be reevaluated,” said Eric Schouten, director of security intelligence at aviation advisory firm Dyami. He added that sudden closures and operational disruptions remained likely as regional developments continued to unfold.

Airlines have increasingly altered Middle East routings over the past two years, often choosing longer paths to avoid active conflict zones. Some Western carriers now fly more frequently over Afghanistan despite concerns linked to Taliban rule, preferring that option to other volatile corridors.

Germany on Wednesday issued a new advisory urging its airlines to avoid Iranian airspace. The notice followed Lufthansa’s decision to revise its Middle East operations amid growing instability. A Wizz Air spokesperson said the airline was avoiding both Iraqi and Iranian airspace, forcing some westbound flights from Dubai and Abu Dhabi to make refuelling and crew-change stops in Cyprus or Greece.

British Airways owner IAG confirmed that all British Airways flights to Bahrain were cancelled up to and including January 16. The group did not provide details on when services might resume.

KLM said it was avoiding Iranian airspace as a precaution, noting that it rarely used the route even before the latest developments. “Last night’s closure of Iranian airspace therefore had no effect on our operations,” a company spokesperson said.

Finnair said it had stopped flying through Iraqi airspace, routing flights to Doha and Dubai over Saudi Arabia instead. The change would slightly extend journey times, the airline said, adding that it had already been avoiding Iranian, Syrian and Israeli airspace for security reasons.

Ryanair has also shifted several routes away from the Middle East in recent months, while Air France has long excluded Iranian airspace from its regular flight plans.

Industry analysts say such rerouting highlights how quickly geopolitical shifts can reshape global aviation patterns. While the immediate impact is longer flight times and higher operating costs, passengers may also face further schedule changes if tensions continue.

For now, airlines remain focused on flexibility, monitoring developments closely as they balance safety, efficiency and the need to keep international routes open.
