At least seven people were killed, and more than 30 others were injured in a devastating explosion on Wednesday at a pharmaceutical manufacturing plant in the Anakapalli district of Andhra Pradesh, southern India. The blast occurred at a facility operated by Escientia Advanced Sciences, a privately-held company specializing in pharmaceutical manufacturing.
The explosion, which took place around lunchtime, sparked a massive fire that engulfed the 40-acre plant, which has been operational since 2019. The district’s collector, Vijaya Krishnan, confirmed the casualties and stated that the injured were quickly transported to nearby hospitals for treatment. “An inquiry has been initiated to identify the exact reason that led to the blast,” Krishnan’s office said in a statement to Reuters.
Rescue operations were swiftly launched, with ten fire tenders deployed to bring the blaze under control. Krishnan’s office reported that the fire was largely contained by late afternoon, though the cause of the explosion remains under investigation.
Escientia Advanced Sciences has yet to issue a public statement or respond to requests for comment regarding the incident.
This tragic event is the latest in a series of industrial accidents in the region. Just last year, two people were killed, and five others were injured in a fire at a solvent reactor unit owned by Sahithi Pharma, also located in the Anakapalli district. The repeated occurrences of such accidents have raised concerns about safety standards and regulatory oversight in the region’s pharmaceutical and chemical manufacturing sectors.
Authorities are now under pressure to conduct a thorough investigation into the cause of the explosion at the Escientia plant and to implement stricter safety protocols to prevent future incidents. The local community, reeling from the loss of life and the impact on the injured, is demanding accountability and assurances that similar tragedies will not occur in the future.
The incident has also drawn attention to the working conditions at pharmaceutical plants in the region, with many calling for improved safety measures to protect workers in these high-risk environments. As the investigation continues, the focus remains on providing medical care to the injured and supporting the families of those who lost their lives in this tragic event.
