Simply put, there is no difference between an ENT doctor and an otolaryngologist. Hence, an otolaryngologist specializes in treating the ears, nose, throat, and mouth. Beyond focusing on the respiratory system, the branch of otolaryngology comprises sinuses, larynx, and the neck and face structures. Today, most otolaryngologists finish their residency program that includes coursework and training in communication sciences, which comprises speech-language pathology and audiology. They also get trained to treat the upper alimentary system’s disorders that are essential for nutrition and digestion. The duties of an otolaryngologist also depend on the kind of practice and additional specialization.

Otolaryngologist vs ENT Surgeon

An otolaryngologist’s special skills comprise managing and diagnosing the larynx, sinuses, upper pharynx, oral cavity, and face and neck structures diseases. The expert otolaryngologists treat, diagnose and manage specialty-specific ailments along with primary care issues like an ENT specialist in both adults and children.

Nose and Ears

An otolaryngologist treats the disorders related to ears, including balance disorders, hearing loss, congenital diseases of the outer and inner ear, and ringing in the ears or treatment for glue ear. He or she also treats the conditions in the nasal cavity and sinuses, such as a nasal blockage caused by a deviated septum, snoring, polyps, allergies, and taste smell disorders. The ENT specialist can also treat the functional and cosmetic issues that occur because of the nose’s appearance and shape.

Neck and head

Otolaryngologists often treat people with migraine headaches. Additionally, they treat the disorders and ailments of the thyroid, esophagus, throat, the voice box that can comprise complexities in speaking, swallowing, and eating. The treatments related to the neck and head areas that impact the smell, hearing, and sight can follow infections or trauma or generate from any facial deformities. The treatment of cranial nerve disorders is a part of the otolaryngologists’ practice and is the main focus area.

The diagnosis, examination, and treatment

An expert otolaryngologist carries out tests and examinations, comprising testing for infections, allergens, and cancers. The otolaryngologist suggests medications, conducts treatment regimens, administers radiotherapy, conducts hearing tests, and refers their patients to other medical specialists, including speech and physical therapies.

That is not all! An otolaryngologist performs reconstructive and cosmetic surgery, using advanced microscopes to operate the body’s fragile structures. The otolaryngological surgeons or ENT surgeons remove the polyps, perform rhinoplasty, correct the cleft palates for modifying the appearance and improving the nose function.

The Sub-Specialization Areas

The otolaryngologists need to complete close to 15 years of their training and education, comprising a medical school, passing examinations, and internships. Several otolaryngologists get added training and the required certification in eight sub-specialization that might include sleep disorders, otology, facial reconstructive and plastic surgery, laryngology, and neurology. Many restrict their practice to any one of the sub-specialization verticals.

These are some of the essential roles and accountabilities of an otolaryngologist as well as an ENT surgeon.
