Accidents happen, and they can happen anywhere. However slip and fall accidents can cause you to lose money in time, and if you’re not careful you can lose the worker’s compensation involved.
Handling this situation can be difficult and confusing, but here are five steps you should follow so that you can get the compensation you need.
1) Immediately Seek Medical Attention
When you find yourself in an accident, you might not see the need to address your personal injuries especially if you don’t see or feel anything.
However, you should always seek immediate medical attention especially when an accident happens on the job. For one, you might find that your injuries could all be internal or that they might not be immediate.
Sometimes injuries can have a delayed response, and if you don’t at least check, you could find yourself suffering from worse symptoms later on.
2) Report the Accident
After your medical check-up, you should promptly report the slip and accident to your immediate superiors.
This might make you feel nervous but don’t feel embarrassed or ashamed; first, it’s not your fault as it most likely is due to company negligence.
Secondly, twelve percent of the roughly 8 million fall accidents recorded are from slips and falls. But reporting the incident to the company is the first part of gathering evidence for your possible case.
3) Gather Evidence
Any accident that happens on company property and/or company time has to be thoroughly investigated and so it would be beneficial for you to gather evidence of what happened.
This means possibly taking pictures of where the slip and fall accident occurred, obtaining witness statements of the event in question, and hopefully obtaining information that exhibits that it wasn’t your fault.
4) Say Nothing Publically
The biggest mistake you can make in the process of a worker’s compensation case is speaking in public about the situation prematurely.
The rule is not to speak about anything until after the money is in your pocket. You don’t want to cast any blame, but you also don’t want to take any blame for it either.
Practice strategic silence on the situation until the relevant issues have been resolved.
5) Call an Attorney
Once you have done your due diligence (sought medical attention and obtained records, obtained proof of notification of the incident to your superiors, and gathered other relevant evidence of the situation) it’s time to call an attorney.
Make sure you seek out one that is specialized in worker’s compensation law and has experience handling them effectively. Otherwise, your effort for your case will be wasted. Come prepared and ready to answer questions.
Make sure you have questions of your own to ask the attorney as well. If you are uncertain about the questions you should ask your attorney click here to read more.
