Self-learning is one of the important skills which an individual is having during schooling and university and even after in professional life. It’s a process of enhancing skills, revising concepts, and also brushing up faded knowledge about any topic. It’s an ability to learn new things without proper supervision or direct dictations, it’s an area where they take control of their own learning process either through tutorials, videos, books, or any channel.
There are various advantages of self-learning which is named as “experiential learning” in academics that prepare a learner to have knowledge about practical things and how to deal a situation practically. Self-learning, in my opinion, is itself a skill where the learner keeps challenging his or her knowledge, improvising concepts, developing vast knowledge about any topic or object if it pertains to science, and keep learning.
A deep self-learner who observes situations and learns from experiences or from people develops many skills over an average leaner;
- Develop effective learning skills
- Develop self-adjustable pace of learning rather of sitting in a class where feels misfit with respect to pace
- Develop problem-solving skills
- Develop time management skills and develops a balance in priorities
Self-learning is also helpful in enhancing more traits of personality which are enhancing personality, developing self-confidence and improving self-esteem. But there are negatives of self-learning skills as well which are lack of feedback or lack of direction, lack of choices or opinions about the topic as it’s only one direction of learning.
Self-learning enhances creativity and innovative skills, it brushes up basic core knowledge and elevates skills to next level. Competency and self-learning are directly relatable, once a person displays self-learning skill it exposes the competence level of a person and shows how a person is versatile and knowledgeable in various topics of life.
