Prime Minister of Pakistan has appointed Dr. Tariq Banuri as the new chairman of Higher Education Commision of Pakistan. There were four names sent to PM by the six-member committee which includes former minister Dr. Sania Nishtar, former parliamentarian Shahnaz Wazir Ali, educationist Faisal Bari, Mirza Qamar Baig and the secretary of the education ministry and philanthropist Syed Babar Ali.
The four candidates were Dr Tariq Banuri, Dr Muhammad Mukhtar, Dr Iqbal Chaudhry and Dr Anwarul Hassan Gilani with suggesting Dr. Tariq Banuri as the top candidate.
Dr Banuri is a well-known name in the field of development and public sector around the world. He started his career from the Civil Services of Pakistan and later went on to earn a PhD in economics from Harvard University. He joined United Nations research as a fellow at World Institute for Development Economics Research (WIDER). Now he is serving as a professor in the Department of City and Metropolitan Planning at the University of Utah.
He received Sitara e Imtiaz from the President of Pakistan and Allyn Young Teaching Prize in Economics from Harvard.
