A Brief Guide on Writing Academic Papers

A Brief Guide on Writing Academic Papers

January 18, 2021

An academic paper is a piece of writing that serves to analyze and interpret a problem and provide solid arguments based on extensive individual research.

In their essence, research papers have many similarities with argumentative essays but traditionally, they are longer and require a deeper understanding of the issue. Not only do they aim to assess a student’s writing knack, but also their skills to conduct profound research and build a solid opinion that makes the difference. Students have to demonstrate a strong comprehension and command over the topic they analyze, study a vast array of resources, as well as make a unique individual contribution to the issue.

Writing Academic Papers
To cut it short, writing a research paper is a time-consuming process that requires a lot of diligence, discipline, and commitment. Unfortunately, professors often provide vague explanations of assignments or set unreasonably tight deadlines, which only makes the task harder and pushes students to seek the help of professional research paper writing services.

On second thought, things become way clearer and easier when you can break the assignment into small and manageable tasks. This is exactly what this guide serves for.

Check Your Understanding of the Assignment

There are students who prefer to start immediately and finish the assignment sooner. However, there may be many hidden pitfalls and reasons why something can go wrong.

To avoid that, first and foremost, you have to make sure that you understand every detail of the assignment. Read it mindfully; if something seems unclear, vague, or confusing, ask your professor for a more detailed explanation or help.Writing Academic Papers

Make sure that its goal, submission date and method, length, and other requirements are clear for you. If not, fill in the missing information before getting down to work.

And finally, create a writing schedule to ensure that you make enough time for researching, writing, and editing your academic paper.

Define academic Paper Topic

Sometimes, professors prefer to assign specific topics to their students; and if this is the case, go to the next step.

However, most often students are allowed to choose the topic to their liking or at least narrow down the broader issue. There are several ways how you can approach this task:

To get the idea for your research paper, you can use a well-established brainstorming technique when you write down everything that comes to your mind and then choose the worthiest option. Some prefer using a pen-and-paper method, while others feel more confident drawing mind maps or spider webs. Choose the methods that suit you best. Alternatively, you can ask your peers to give you an idea – or even talk to your professor for some help.

Freewriting proved itself effective too. Based on this method, you should write non-stop for 5-7 minutes. It implies that you already have a specific topic in mind and serves rather as a tool to order your thoughts and check if you have anything to say at all.

To avoid procrastination, make sure that you choose the topic that interests you.

Pre-Research the Issue

If you don’t want to dive into futile work, it is important to do the research before the academic paper plan. In the process you may realize that you don’t have enough sources to cover this topic or conversely, you need to narrow it down.

Use as many electronic and printed resources as you may find; thus, you will increase your chances to find worthy information and enhance the credibility of the paper. Forums and discussions may contain valuable quotes or references you can use for your paper so check them too.

It’s useful to take a peek at the opposite point of view as well. In doing so you may find breaches in your or the opponent’s defense, as well as figure out a unique value of your academic paper.

Set Out Your Thesis

A thesis statement is the position of the researcher that runs like a golden thread through the entire paper. A perfect thesis must be clear, succinct, and contentious. In other words, it should sum up the main point of the research, put forward the controversial idea that should be proven and analyzed, as well as set out the writer’s opinion supported by each and every argument in the paper. As you go on with your work, a thesis may face some changes but it will help you stay within the limits of your main idea.

Map Upon Outline

Now that you have a bunch of information, it’s time to structure it. Develop a detailed plan that would reflect the main points, arguments, and proofs broken into parts and sections with relevant titles. Thus, you will order and visualize the ideas in your head and it will keep you on track throughout the entire writing process. Consult it every time you feel that you start to stray.

Get Down to Writing Your Paper

Although the paper-writing process is quite complex, it comes down to a few simple steps:

  • Writing a draft version. Rather than falling into perfectionism, it is important to maintain regular progress at this stage. You shouldn’t get stuck at perfecting every sentence but you do want to keep your narration organized and logical. Also, make sure that every paragraph covers a new argument and has all components: an argument, evidence, and a transition sentence. If you provide citations in your paper, ensure that you specify their sources; otherwise, you may be accused of plagiarism. Once you’re done, go to the next step.
  • At this point you already have your paper written, and when you see the full picture, it’s time to improve your writing. Be exacting about every discrepancy and inaccuracy, check out the paper’s readability, correct mistakes and typos. Make sure that the paragraphs have the right order, the evidence is sufficient, and there are no contradictions.
  • Clean-read the paper to find any remaining errors. As soon as you are ready, you can submit the paper.
