The UAE is expected to see significant growth in power demand in the coming decades, spurred by rapid urbanization, economic diversification, and the nation’s goal to lead in sustainable energy initiatives. As the UAE ramps up its energy consumption, industry experts emphasize the need for advanced grid infrastructure that can support both traditional and renewable energy sources.
Dr. Mostafa AlGuezeri, Managing Director for the Gulf and Maghreb at Hitachi Energy, highlighted the UAE’s ambitious objectives in an interview with Khaleej Times. He pointed to the UAE Energy Strategy 2050, which aims to cut carbon emissions from power generation by 70% while increasing the contribution of clean energy to the national grid. “As electricity demand continues to rise, there is a critical need to deploy advanced grid infrastructure that supports both traditional and renewable energy sources,” AlGuezeri explained.
According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), global demand for cooling systems is expected to triple by 2050 due to rising global temperatures. The Middle East, including the UAE, is especially impacted, with electricity demand spiking during the hot summer months, creating a heavy strain on the power grid.
“At Hitachi Energy, we believe electricity will be the backbone of the entire energy system,” AlGuezeri said. He emphasized that digital transformation is essential for advancing the energy transition toward a carbon-neutral future.
To support the UAE’s energy goals, Hitachi Energy is focusing on projects like the Gulf Interconnection Project, which links the electricity grids of Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries. This initiative enhances energy security by enabling cross-border power sharing, reducing dependence on individual national grids.
A multifaceted approach is needed to relieve strain on electricity systems, AlGuezeri noted. “First, energy efficiency must be improved on both the demand and consumption sides. Solutions that enhance grid flexibility and help manage energy loads dynamically are critical. Additionally, integrating renewables into the energy mix is essential. In the UAE, solar power holds immense potential to offset high electricity demand during the day,” he added.
Hitachi Energy contributes to these efforts by offering digital grid management tools, advanced power electronics, and control systems designed to stabilize the grid amid fluctuating renewable energy supplies. The company’s technologies, such as grid edge solutions and digital substation technologies, play a pivotal role in smoothly integrating renewable energy into the national grid.
With substantial investments underway in renewable energy projects, such as the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park, one of the world’s largest solar facilities, the UAE is positioned to achieve its target of generating 50% of its electricity from clean energy sources by 2050.
“As the UAE transitions to a sustainable energy future, we are committed to being a key partner,” AlGuezeri said. “Together with customers and partners, we enable a sustainable energy future for all, ensuring that electricity will be the backbone of the entire energy system.”
With the UAE’s plans for a low-carbon future progressing, the country’s strategy marks a significant step toward energy security and sustainability in the region, supporting both its environmental goals and energy demands.
