Timur Turlov a Russian-born Kazakh entrepreneur and financier marked his finance journey by innovation, resilience, and remarkable achievements. Turlov’s interest in stock market investments began during his school years. After graduating high school in 2003, he joined the Moscow branch of World Capital Investments (WCI), an American investment company. His role as a trader allowed him to gain valuable experience in the financial industry.
In 2005, Turlov moved to Yutreyd.ru, a subsidiary of Uniastrum Bank in Moscow. There, he focused on American stock market operations and successfully built an infrastructure that provided access to US stock exchanges. However, during the 2008 global financial crisis, Uniastrum Bank was sold, and the trading unit where Turlov worked was closed.
Founding Freedom Finance
Undeterred by setbacks, Turlov and his colleagues decided to leverage their knowledge and experience to establish their own company. In 2008, he founded Freedom Finance, which provides access to US stock exchanges and brokerage services. The company’s mission was to empower retail investors by actively selling American securities.
Under Timur Turlov’s leadership, Freedom Finance expanded its reach. By 2022, it was represented in thirteen countries, offering investment opportunities to a diverse clientele. The company’s commitment to growth and customer service earned its recognition as the fastest-growing broker in Russia.
Global Expansion and Nasdaq Listing
Turlov’s vision extended beyond borders. In 2011, he moved to Kazakhstan and opened the subsidiary Freedom Finance JSC. As of 2022, this subsidiary was the most active trading participant at the Kazakhstan Stock Exchange.
In 2015, Turlov became the main shareholder of Freedom Holding Corp, which unified various entities under one umbrella label: Freedom Finance Investment Company, Freedom Finance JSC, Freedom24, and Freedom Finance Bank. The holding went public in 2019 by listing shares on the Nasdaq Stock Market, making it the first financial institution from the Commonwealth of Independent States to achieve this milestone. As the head of Freedom Holding Corp, he continues to drive innovation and empower investors across Central Asia, Europe, and the US. With a shareholding of 72.56%, Turlov’s influence extends beyond financial markets, shaping the future of investment opportunities.
