Sharjah Airport and Air Arabia have announced the launch of the first direct flight route between Sharjah and the Maldives, enhancing connectivity and travel options for passengers. The new daily service, which starts on October 27, will operate between Sharjah International Airport and Velana International Airport in Malé, using Airbus A320 aircraft.
Ali Salim Al Midfa, Chairman of Sharjah Airport Authority (SAA), described the new route as a strategic milestone for Sharjah Airport and a boost for the region’s aviation sector. “The launch of this new route reflects Sharjah Airport’s role as a key player in enhancing the aviation sector in the region,” Al Midfa stated. He highlighted that the Maldives, a premier destination for global tourists, offers significant opportunities for strengthening tourism and economic ties between the UAE and the island nation. “This route opens new horizons for economic and commercial cooperation between the two countries,” he added.
The decision to introduce direct flights to the Maldives aligns with Sharjah Airport Authority’s broader vision for growth. Al Midfa emphasized that the Maldives’ status as a highly popular destination was a key motivator in expanding services. He explained that the airport remains committed to improving services and enhancing passenger experience, especially for those traveling to sought-after tourist destinations.
Air Arabia’s Group CEO, Adel Al Ali, also expressed enthusiasm about the airline’s latest network expansion. “The inaugural flight to the Maldives represents an exciting new chapter in our network expansion. We are excited to offer our customers direct access to this tropical paradise,” Al Ali remarked. “With the addition of this new route, we reaffirm our commitment to provide affordable and value-driven air travel while offering more options to explore new destinations around the world.”
The Maldives is expected to attract a significant number of travelers, adding momentum to Sharjah Airport’s strategic development plan. Sharjah Airport Authority aims to increase its annual passenger capacity to 25 million through ongoing efforts to expand destination offerings and partnerships. These plans include welcoming additional international airlines, increasing flight frequencies, and establishing new routes.
Mr. Hassaan Waheed, Deputy Ambassador of the Maldives to the UAE, attended the inaugural ceremony, joined by a delegation of officials from Sharjah Airport Authority and Air Arabia. The event celebrated the collaboration between the UAE and the Maldives, with dignitaries emphasizing the route’s significance for tourism and economic ties.
With this launch, Sharjah Airport strengthens its footprint on the international travel map, aiming to position itself as a major regional hub. The addition of direct flights to the Maldives underscores its commitment to supporting tourism and economic growth while meeting the demand for unique, affordable travel experiences.
