Qatar is being considered as a potential host for an international event centered on digital technology and innovation, underscoring its growing status as a hub for creativity and entrepreneurship in the Gulf Co-operation Council (GCC) region.
Yasser Dhouib, executive director of the Canadian-Qatari Business Forum (CQBF), revealed plans to propose Qatar as a “guest nation” for MTL connect: Montreal Digital Week, an annual event organized by the Canadian nonprofit Montreal Digital Spring (Printemps numérique). This event brings together entrepreneurs, researchers, policymakers, and industry leaders to explore the challenges and opportunities presented by the digital revolution.
Qatar’s Innovation Ecosystem
Speaking on the sidelines of this year’s MTL connect, Dhouib highlighted Qatar’s significant investments in technology, education, and research and development (R&D) as key factors that make it a strong candidate to host such a prestigious event.
“Qatar is leading the way in driving innovation and building a vibrant ecosystem that promotes creativity and entrepreneurship. Hosting an event like MTL connect would further enhance its status as a regional leader in digital transformation,” Dhouib said.
The CQBF has been actively engaging with public and private sector stakeholders in Qatar, including the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology, to explore the feasibility of bringing the event to Doha. According to Dhouib, initial discussions have been positive, with the idea “respected and studied.”
From Montreal to Doha
MTL connect, known for its cross-disciplinary approach to digital innovation, examines the economic, social, cultural, and environmental impacts of technology across various industries. The event serves as a platform for expanding networks, forging collaborations, and addressing global digital challenges.
Dhouib envisions a potential “Doha connect” as an extension of the Montreal event, blending the expertise of both cities. “Montreal is a hub for clean tech, high tech, and artificial intelligence (AI) in North America, while Doha is emerging as an ideal venue for these fields. This partnership could foster valuable exchanges between the two nations,” he said.
Strengthening Ties
The proposed collaboration aligns with Qatar’s vision of becoming a global innovation leader. Dhouib emphasized that hosting MTL connect in Doha would solidify its position as a key player in the GCC’s digital landscape and create opportunities for knowledge-sharing and economic growth.
“This is a very interesting partnership we are seeking to materialize with Qatari authorities. Both cities can learn and grow from this concept,” he added.
As discussions progress, the CQBF continues to advocate for the event, confident that it will provide a platform for Qatar to showcase its technological advancements while fostering deeper ties with Canada and the global innovation community.
