Islam’s holiest city, Makkah, is witnessing heightened economic activity ahead of this year’s Ramadan, as markets, shopping centers, and hotels experience a marked increase in visitors. The city’s role as both a spiritual and commercial hub becomes especially visible during the holy month, when pilgrims and residents converge for religious observances.
A field survey conducted by the Saudi Press Agency indicated a significant rise in demand across retail and food sectors. Shoppers are purchasing staple goods, dates, Ramadan beverages, and decorative items, reflecting the seasonal priorities of residents, expatriates, and visiting pilgrims. Traditional markets and modern shopping complexes have reported brisk activity, supported by promotional offers from businesses aiming to attract customers during the holy month.
The hospitality sector has also seen an uptick in bookings, particularly for hotels and serviced apartments located near the Grand Mosque. Occupancy levels are expected to increase further in the initial days of Ramadan as the influx of pilgrims grows. Transport and logistics services have intensified operations, with authorities coordinating efforts to ensure smooth traffic flow and easy access to the mosque for worshippers.
Health and regulatory measures have been strengthened to guarantee food safety and service quality. The Makkah Municipality confirmed that it has increased inspections of markets and retail outlets across the city as part of a comprehensive field plan. Municipal teams are conducting continuous rounds of inspections at public markets, shopping centers, food outlets, industrial kitchens, and restaurants to monitor food quality, storage methods, hygiene standards, and compliance with municipal regulations.
Officials emphasized that inspections continue around the clock, particularly during peak periods of commercial activity. The municipality urged citizens and residents to report any concerns through official channels, reinforcing community oversight and maintaining public health and safety standards in line with the city’s status as a destination for millions of worshippers from across Saudi Arabia and abroad.
Ramadan remains a key period for commercial activity in Makkah, driving seasonal sales that benefit small and medium-sized enterprises and support a full economic cycle in the city. The surge in retail, hospitality, and transport activity demonstrates Makkah’s capacity to accommodate the dual demands of religious observance and economic engagement.
Authorities noted that this seasonal growth highlights the city’s ability to respond effectively to large inflows of pilgrims while maintaining service quality and safety standards. The combination of spiritual significance and commercial vitality reinforces Makkah’s position as a globally recognized center for Muslims during Ramadan.
