Saudi Arabia’s telecommunications industry has taken a significant step forward with the launch of its first live Cloud Radio Access Network (RAN) site, marking a milestone in the Kingdom’s 5G evolution. This development aligns with Saudi Arabia’s broader digital transformation strategy and Vision 2030 objectives.
Successful Deployment of Cloud RAN
On March 25, Finnish technology leader Nokia and Saudi telecom company Zain KSA announced the successful deployment of the Kingdom’s first Cloud RAN site. The site, connected to Zain KSA’s 5G core network, achieved peak download speeds of 1.5 gigabits per second during testing. The trial period, which ran from December 24 to January 26, demonstrated the effectiveness of cloud-based solutions in improving network performance.
Saudi Arabia is investing in cutting-edge technologies to create a more flexible, multi-vendor ecosystem that meets the evolving needs of consumers and businesses. The Cloud RAN initiative is expected to play a crucial role in this transformation, paving the way for enhanced connectivity and new enterprise applications.
Economic Growth and 5G Expansion
According to TechSci Research, the Kingdom’s 5G sector is projected to grow significantly, reaching a market value of $13.41 billion by 2029, up from $2.1 billion in 2023. This growth reflects the increasing demand for advanced telecommunications infrastructure as Saudi Arabia positions itself as a global technology hub.
Industry Leaders on Cloud RAN Impact
Zain KSA’s Chief Technology Officer, Mohammed Al-Nujaidi, emphasized the company’s commitment to innovation.
“Partnering with Nokia on the Kingdom’s first live Cloud RAN site allows us to explore new service models, reduce ongoing network costs, and respond more quickly to enterprise and consumer demands,” Al-Nujaidi stated. “Increased network agility will support a wide array of new use cases, underscoring our role in driving Saudi Arabia’s digital transformation.”
Mohammad Al-Tayeh, customer team head for Zain Group and Zain KSA at Nokia Mobile Networks, highlighted the technological advancements brought by Cloud RAN.
“By introducing a fully cloud-native approach, we not only match the performance of purpose-built RAN but also create a future-ready platform that supports AI-RAN, Open RAN, and potential 6G innovations,” Al-Tayeh said.
He further noted that cloudification can enhance resource optimization, reduce total ownership costs, and unlock growth opportunities across multiple sectors in Saudi Arabia.
Enhancing Network Efficiency and Future Prospects
The deployment of Cloud RAN underscores the potential of cloud-native architectures in improving network efficiency and accelerating service delivery. Nokia’s Cloud RAN approach ensures full feature parity with traditional, purpose-built solutions while providing a scalable foundation for AI-driven RAN and Open RAN technologies.
In addition to Cloud RAN, Nokia and Zain KSA have introduced other innovations. In January, they launched the region’s first 4G/5G Femtocell solution to enhance mobile coverage and optimize connectivity for enterprise customers.
Conclusion
Saudi Arabia’s telecom sector continues to advance rapidly with investments in cloud-based and AI-powered solutions. The successful deployment of the first live Cloud RAN site reinforces the Kingdom’s commitment to digital transformation and strengthens its position as a leader in 5G technology. As Vision 2030 progresses, further innovations in telecommunications are expected to drive economic and technological growth.
