Israel Displaces Over 20,000 Palestinians from Jenin Refugee Camp

More than 20,000 Palestinians have been forcibly displaced from the Jenin refugee camp in the northern West Bank following an Israeli military offensive, according to Palestinian officials.

Jenin Deputy Governor Mansour al-Saadi stated that Israeli forces had completely destroyed the camp, forcing thousands of residents to flee their homes, leaving behind their belongings and essential documents.

Widespread Displacement and Devastation

“The (Israeli) occupation has entirely destroyed the Jenin refugee camp and forcibly displaced over 20,000 residents,” al-Saadi told Voice of Palestine radio. Many of those displaced are now seeking shelter in other West Bank cities, as their return remains impossible due to the scale of destruction.

Al-Saadi described the Israeli offensive as a form of collective punishment aimed at nearly 400,000 residents of Jenin and its surrounding areas. He also warned of severe economic losses and the disruption of education due to the ongoing military operations.

“This is part of a larger conspiracy to erase the refugee issue entirely,” he said, calling for international human rights organizations to investigate and document the extent of the destruction and possible civilian casualties still buried under the rubble.

Expanding Israeli Military Operations

The Israeli military launched its latest West Bank offensive on January 21, targeting Jenin, its refugee camp, and nearby towns. The Palestinian Health Ministry reports that at least 25 people have been killed since the offensive began.

The military operation has since expanded to other areas:

• January 27 – Israeli forces launched an assault in Tulkarem, killing five more Palestinians.
• February 2 – Attacks were carried out in Tammun and the Far’a refugee camp in Tubas.

War Crimes Allegations and Legal Proceedings

The escalation in the West Bank comes despite a truce in Gaza, which took effect on January 19 after months of Israeli bombardment that has killed nearly 48,200 Palestinians, most of them women and children.

Israel is currently facing legal action at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) over accusations of genocide in Gaza. Additionally, in November 2024, the International Criminal Court (ICC) issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant on charges of war crimes and crimes against humanity.

The humanitarian crisis in Jenin continues to worsen, with growing calls for international intervention to protect Palestinian civilians and hold those responsible for the devastation accountable.
